Get to Know…Nick Elliott

By December 5, 2016Get to Know...

How long have you been with Liquidus? It’ll be 5 years this spring.

If Liquidus were an animal, what would it be? Probably a jellyfish, on good days I can see all the separate moving parts working together…plus as you know a jellyfish is very liquidy so it matches in a literal sense as well.

What’s your role at Liquidus and what’s a typical day like for you? I’m a front-end developer (coding what you see) though I have done some back-end (behind the scenes) coding here too. Typical day involves me shuffling papers around looking busy while paying a highly trained monkey 2 bananas per hour to write code.

What are you most proud of working at Liquidus? I’m most proud of getting VPAID ads to work with our AdBuilder, I like that we were able to make these types of ad templates so highly customizable while still allowing a high degree of visual fidelity and smooth user experience.

What’s your favorite Liquidus memory? Playing Dominion after work when that was all the rage.

Describe your desk. 2 monitors, keyboard, mouse, and my headphones…I like it clean and minimal.

Enough about work…

Favorite vacation spot? Yellowstone National Park.

Celebrity encounter? Chilled with Sir-Mix-a-Lot after a rave for a bit when I was ~18.

How would you describe your family? Well, pets outnumber humans 4-2 in our house so, hairy.

Chicago original or transplant? South side born and raised.

iPhone or Android? Android.

When is your birthday? Does your personality line up with your astrological sign? June, so I’m a Gemini.  I don’t put much stock in astrology but I fit the archetype.  I’m independent and like to keep my options open to maximize the choices available to me.  I’ve fallen into keeping a clear separation between different facets of my life which is very Gemini-esque, but I doubt the positions of planets at the time of my birth had much to do with that.

Favorite band? Pink Floyd.

Favorite Chicago neighborhood? Why? Lincoln Square.  Plenty of beer and sausage, and more greenery than a lot of other areas.

What is the one thing that should be taught in school that isn’t already? Financial literacy.

I really love a good….. bubble bath (rubber ducky optional).

In my free time, I like to….. play Overwatch or cook with my wife.

Do you have any pets? I have a German Shepherd mix and 3 cats…all rescues.

Any life hacks? Try to find ways to make money work for you instead of you working for money.

What was your favorite subject/class in school? Never liked school, but anything that could get me into the computer lab would be my favorite.

What’s your morning routine? Drag myself out of bed with just enough time for a shower and coffee. Nighttime routine? Read until I can’t keep my eyes open.

Favorite TV show? Really enjoying Westworld at the moment.  20 years ago my answer would have been Ren & Stimpy.

What’s your kryptonite? Christmas music.

What’s your guilty pleasure? Katy Perry.

Who was your college mascot? I went to Columbia College Chicago so if we had one it was probably an overcaffeinated film student swimming in student loans.

Do you speak any other languages? I’m resisting the urge to list computer languages like a smartass neckbeard, so no.

What do you want to invent? A device that allows the meatspace of the human mind to be mapped to a digital model.  Dream recording, telekinesis, and immortality are just the beginning, just please don’t set your password to “12345”, I hear getting your mind hacked is a real b.

How would your friends describe you? One of the quietest crazy people they know.

What’s the best gift anyone has ever given you? Not sure if anything can top the NES.

Who’s your celebrity crush? Christoph Waltz.  Sorry Katy.

What decade would you fit in best with? The 80s according to my wife.

Are you afraid of anything? Tarantula hawks.

Pizza. Middle piece or crust? I’ll gladly take all the neglected middle pieces.

Are you superstitious about anything? That if I indulge superstition, the world will give me something to be superstitious about.

Do you believe in ghosts or UFOs? Anything is possible, though I do think it’s more likely that the world is some alien kid’s science project than for ghosts to exist.  At least that’s what I keep telling myself. Really don’t need ghosts of family members seeing what goes on behind closed doors.

Do you snooze or wake up when your alarm goes off? One snooze maximum.

Do you Instagram, Tweet, Facebook or Snap? None of the above, trying (perhaps in vain) to hold on to something resembling privacy.

A little of both, hanging out in the backyard with friends…moved out to the country recently and that’s 90% of what we do out there. Win the lottery or find your dream job?  Lottery, I can wax philosophical about what my dream job is while flying in my solid gold G6.  And before Donald even asks, no it’s not available for rent.

Favorite exercise? I’m not familiar with this word you’re using.

Do you text or call? Text, as if I’d use my phone to make calls like a schmuck in the 80s.

What’s your pet peeve? Inconsistent variable naming conventions.

Are you an introvert or extrovert? I’m answering this from my secure underground bunker.

Are you a healthy eater? Not on purpose, I don’t usually have a taste for sweet things so that gives me a lot of leeway on other dietary choices.

If you were going to sing karaoke what song would you choose? Wham! – Careless Whisper

What is your strongest personal quality? Ability to stay calm and focused under pressure.

If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what would it be? The moon landing, specifically the look on their faces if they could see me standing there.

What is a skill you’d like to learn and why? Metalworking and welding, I want to take my knowledge in electronics and combine it with sculpture to make large scale art installations.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of… reality TV? Kill me. The holidays? Relaxing by the fireplace California? Knows how to party The 90s? Super Nintendo Chalmers High school? Mountain Dew and Quake LAN parties til dawn

What would you tell your 5 year old self? You think Oregon Trail is cool?  You won’t even believe the kinds of video games we have in the future.  Tell your old man to put everything he’s got into Apple. 16 year old self? Quit smoking.  Keep going with that computer stuff, there’s a real future for you there.  Tell your old man to put everything he’s got into Google.
